“Hawaii is not that special, it’s nice but I wouldn’t want to live here…”
This is what I thought many years ago after the first week of my Hawaiian vacation. I was going from tourist attraction to tourist attraction seeing beautiful places but was missing something.
On the second week I stopped being a tourist, I stopped rushing around, and I took time to feel the spirit of Hawaii and I fell in love with the Islands. I gave notice at work, left home and moved to Hawaii for an unforgettable adventure…and the start of a life of travel!
I worked at The Royal Hawaiian Hotel, the second hotel to be built on Waikiki beach, known as the Pink Palace of the Pacific. I was hired because I wore shoes to the interview…but that’s another story!
It was a good lesson to learn, to take time to really know what is special about a place and not be a trophy tourist – checking off places of interest listed in a guide book – but to look deeper, too feel what is special.
I have been designated a Hawaii Destination Expert by the Hawaii Visitor and Convention Bureau. Each Hawaiian Island is different, with its own attractions and unique charm – do you know which is best for you?
Do you know…
- Hawaii (the Big Island) – contains 11 of the 13 officially recognized climatic zones found in the Earth’s atmosphere?
- Kauai – is where you will find The Grand Canyon of the Pacific and location for many movies including South Pacific, Jurassic Park and The Descents.
- Lanai – is an island without traffic lights, home of two world class golf courses…and where Bill Gates was married.
- Maui – has more miles of swimmable beach, the largest dormant volcano in the world and cowboys.
- Oahu – has the only royal palace on American soil, International Surfing Championships and is home to the majority of Hawaii’s diverse population.
