Not Your Average Luau

2009-08-12 By Linda Tatten

An Authentic Hawaii Show at the Royal Hawaiian

When in Hawaii it’s not difficult to find a Luau to attend, there is food, dance – an evening of Polynesian entertainment. Royal Hawaiian Hotel – where, many years ago, I was hired to work in the gift shop because I wore shoes to the interview – is doing something different.

They have changed the name of their Luau to Royal’s Aha Aina: feasts of food, song and hula.  They want to tell the Hawaiian story and focus on their culture.  They go from King Kamehameha’s 18th century warriors to a swinging, World War 11 dance routine.

Imagine an evening of craft stations, storytelling, a full-service four-course meal as you lookout at Waikiki Beach and Diamond Head.

The Royal Hawaiian has completed a $110 million renovation of the property…a good time to visit.

Sheraton Resort & Spa Maui

2009-07-06 By Linda Tatten

New Spa at Black Rock

New Spa at Black Rock… sounds like an old time western, well you would have to go way way way west, it’s located in Hawaii.  The Sheraton Resort and now Spa, is located on 23 beachfront acres on Ka’anapali Beach in Maui, a great place to watch the sun set and enjoy the nightly torch-lighting and cliff-diving ceremonies. The last time I stayed here was with my brother and family; they loved the hotel and especially enjoyed the incredible sun sets.

I like travel; I get to go to a lunch seminar to learn what’s new with the Sheraton Hotels in Hawaii. I am obsessed with Hawaii – as I mentioned in a previous blog, so to hear what’s new in Hawaii, while eating pasta…well let’s just say life is good!

Spas are big business and a requirement for the traveler who wants a little pampering after a day of sightseeing.  The Sheraton in Maui has just added a Spa to their hotel – beach, divers, sunsets and now a Spa…what are you waiting for?

My Hawaii Obsession

2009-06-13 By Linda Tatten

I love Hawaii

I’m a Hawaii Destination Specialist and recently attended a seminar to update my designation.  The bad news is, after spending time going over each island and all they have to offer, I have become obsessed with going back.  I have been to Hawaii many times and lived there for a year and now feel the pull to return.

I lived in Oahu and worked at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel on Waikiki Beach. On my last visit I spent a few nights at the Pink Palace before my Hawaiian cruise. At check-in I mentioned I had worked at the Camera and Gift shop many years ago, when the bell boy brought my bag he greeted me as if I had come home and wouldn’t take a tip.  I had gotten the job because I wore shoes to the interview!

I’m anxious to see this grand hotel again, after her 84 million dollar renovation.  All of the Waikiki area has been going through renovations, the area had gotten a bit run down and tourist were going right to the outer islands. New restaurants and upscale shops have been added to bring in more tourist.

I found myself watching Lost to see the beautiful Hawaii scenery, I even watched an old Magnum PI last night…this is really becoming an obsession!

Aloha
